Rustic Hemp Rope Pendant Light

Hemp rope has a coarser hand than most shade materials, and that is the point. Coiled and bound into shape, it gives this pendant a weight and a shadow line that finer fibres cannot manage, and it ages the way rope always does, deepening slightly in colour and settling into its form. Under a warm bulb the rope reads amber rather than beige, and the gaps between coils throw broken light onto whatever sits below.

It suits the rooms where people gather and where a fitting is allowed to have some presence: over a farmhouse table, above a kitchen island, or dropped into a double-height entryway where a smaller light would vanish. Against reclaimed timber, painted brick or a plain white ceiling it does the same job, which is to give the eye somewhere to land. Two or three in a row over a long table is a straightforward way to fill a difficult span.

The shade fits a standard pendant cord and hangs from an existing ceiling point, with drop length adjusted at installation so it clears heads and sightlines. Keep the recommended clearance between the bulb and the rope, use an LED that runs cool, and never exceed the marked wattage. Dust it with a brush; hemp does not respond well to damp cloths or cleaning sprays.
